Township Hotel Lover Labour Association organized a protest in front of the Tharabar Gate Hotel in ancient Bagan city for laying off several hotel staff.
About 30 protestors, starting from 3 pm, were holding vinyl placards reading "Tharabar Gate Hotel must reinstate the dismissed union leaders now and stop unfairness at Tharabar Gate Hotel."
They also chanted slogans such as "Reappoint dismissed hotel workers immediately; Down with the cronies attempting to harm the ancient Bagan cultural zone; The government must review the land lease for Tharabar Hotel; and Down with the cronies exploiting Bangan locals."
"These workers can find work at other places but we are protesting because our workers did their jobs systematically at the hotel. They were dutiful. If the managers are not satisfied with their employees, they always look for ways to fire the workers regardless of how they try their best or how much experience they have," said Thein Shwe, chairman of the association.
The protest was staged in accord with the law and the workers said they would continue their protest or open a protest camp if their demands are not met.
The hotel owner fired labour union chairman and 13 members working for the hotel citing few guests as the reason. Consequently, a protest camp was opened on October 12 in 2018.
Sixty days after the protest camp opening on December 11, township police broke up the camp and filed a lawsuit against protest leader Nay Myo Win under Section 19 of the Peaceful Assembly and Procession Law.
After the protest camp broke up, dismissed workers and supporters from Mandalay Region organized a protest column and marched to Nay Pyi Taw on December 13. But they were stopped by police at the exit of Nyaung-U and 13 protestors arrested.
