The third Singapore festival, which will be a celebration of food culture and art of the island-state, is expected to perk up downtown Yangon later in the month, a senior Singapore Tourism Board official told The Myanmar Times yesterday.
The three-day event, from November 30 to December 2, will be held in Bogalay Zay Street according to John Gregory Conceicao, executive director of the International Group of Singapore Tourism Board (STB).
“This time we want to do something different. One thing we want to show is our street food. I think people in Myanmar are familiar with some Singapore dishes. We want people to see Singapore food and Myanmar food together in the festival,” Conceicao said in a press briefing on Thursday.
The STB has been holding the Singapore Festival since 2016 in Myanmar Plaza and Junction City but this time, it will be celebrated on the streets, complete with art, culture, food entertainment.
During the festival, visitors can enjoy exciting activities from ground-breaking food collaborations to tech-driven interactive art installations and families can participate in activities such as heritage games and envisioning workshops conducted by urban rejuvenation social enterprise Doh-Eain.
“We are very excited to announce the Singapore Festival 2018. This annual event is a celebration of Singapore’s close friendship with Myanmar. We plan to offer consumers a much more interactive and personal experience of Singapore’s Passion Made Possible destination brand at this year’s festival,” Conceicao said.
According to the Singapore Tourism Board, more than 146,000 Myanmar travellers visited Singapore last year, a 28 percent increase compared to 2016.
For the first half of this year, 74,000 Myanmar travellers visited Singapore the same number for the whole of last year, he said.
“Family leisure travellers top the number of visitors from Myanmar followed by business travellers,” he added.
The festival’s main event includes a medley of gastronomic experiences from over 20 street food stalls.
Singapore’s very own annual “50 Cents Fest”, the “500 Kyat Food Fair” at Singapore Festival offer visitors the chance to sample a diverse range of Singapore and Myanmar traditional and contemporary flavours at 500 kyat per dish.
“This is good collaboration between STB and Yangon’s authorities. We have never done it before I think this is ground-breaking for us to do something like this in Yangon. We want to see part of Singapore in Yangon to create awareness in Myanmar about visiting Singapore,” Conceicao said.
The festival will take place along Bogalay Zay Street, middle block from 4pm to 9pm.
