The three Arakan youths suspected of killing a military personnel have been allowed to post bail amounting to K10 million (US$6290) each on Monday, a court official confirmed.

The three were arrested on suspicion of the killing of army corporal Ko Win Htike on September 25, according to Win Myaing, a police officer from Sittwe Township police.

Investigators apparently did not find enough evidence to link them to the crime so they were allowed to post bail.

“According to the law, detention without charges is limited to 30 days. If there is not enough evidence to charge them, they are allowed bail” he said.

The detained suspects were identified as May Yu htun from Sittwe township, Aung Chay from Buthidaung township and Khai Bo Bo from Pauktaw township all in Rakhine State.

Aung Zaw Lin was arrested on the final day of his distance university exam and Khai Bo Bo was arrested in Sittwe. May Yu Htun was arrested before his exam and failed to take it.

“It is so sad I lost my dignity and my education. I was arrested and put in jailed even though there was no evidence that we killed him,” said May Yu Htun.

The suspects were active members of the Arakan Youth Congress (AYC). One of them, Aung Zaw Linn is also a member of Arakan National Party, and the party provided bail for him, said Daw Aye Nu Sein, vice chairman of the ANP.

“We just stand for Arakan youths who are the future leaders of the Arakan people. We hope the case will be dismissed soon,” she said.

Khai Bo Bo said they released according to the police procedures on bail, including applying for their temporary release in the court.
