With the aim implement preventive measures against earthquakes, Yangon Region Government Committee is now conducting awareness programs at private schools, factories and community centers as a first priority. Moreover, the Yangon Government held for the first time an earthquake forum at the Myanmar Convention Center in October of 2016 in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement.
The 2nd earthquake forum was held at the Yangon Technological University on July 13th and 14th this year. The Yangon Government also shared knowledge and information about the ins and outs of seismic movements.
Totaling 1,000 students from eight schools in 2016, 2,825 students from 22 schools in 2017 and 3,927 students from 26 schools this year held rehearsals in case of an earthquake, according to Social Affairs Minister Naing Ngan Lin.
Myanmar’s most important and populated cities such as Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay lies on the Sagaing Fault, a major fault line in Myanmar that had shown itself to be prone to frequent seismic activities over the years.
Many citizens, especially Yangonites, have expressed fears that a strong enough earthquake would cause a great deal of destruction and loss of lives due to the heavy population density as well as questionable integrity of buildings both old and new.
