State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi marked with a speech on Thursday the third International Women’s Day celebrated in Myanmar.
With women making up more than half of the country’s population, a peaceful and democratic federal system could only succeed if women were fully utilised in politics, the economy and social sectors, the State Counsellor told the audience at the Myanmar International Convention Centre (MICC-2) in Nay Pyi Taw.
Moreover, for the successful implementations of Union objectives, cooperation must be based on the individual democratic spirit and habit and then it must increase into mutual understandings, respect,
“A country’s human rights values will be enhanced when women are granted their rights,” she said.
“Also using womens’ strength and ability will support economic development as well.”
The State Counsellor also emphasized the importance of women’s role in rural areas as 30 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product comes from the agriculture sector, along with 70 per cent of the total population.
She also urged a new generation of women to strive for their security and improve their skills while learning from the examples set by talented Myanmar women of successive past eras.
