New Mon State Party (NMSP) and Lahu Democratic Union (LDU) agree to the national reconciliation efforts as they will sign the National Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) today, 13 February.
The signing will be held in Nay Pyi Taw’s Myanmar International Convention Center – 2 after which they will officially be recognized as no longer being a part of illegal organizations in Myanmar.
The Ministry of Home Affairs had already released statements on February 11 announcing the newfound legality of the NMSP and LDU, a part of the United Nationalities Federal Council.
Out of the multiple parties and ethnic armed forces within the UNFC, Karenni National Progressive Party had planned to sign the NCA but has temporarily ceased efforts to do so after the clash with Myanmar’s military in December 2017.
The Shan State Progressive Party, another NCA signee candidate forecasted in the past, had formally requested their withdrawal from the UNFC.
According to rumors, the Arakan National Council had also planned to sign the NCA along with NMSP and LDU but representative of the party did not participate in the signing event.
The total count of ethnic armed groups and political parties that had signed the NCA is now 10.
The 3rd meeting of the 21st Century Panglong summit has also been held off at the behest of eight ethnic organizations including the NMSP, requesting it to be held only after necessary political dialogues have all been completed.
