A mobile application to guide mothers and midwives through pregnancy and childbirth has been launched.
The launch ceremony for Safe Delivery was held on February 7 in Nay Pyi Taw. The Minister for Health and Sports, Dr Myint Htwe, said the app would be helpful in emergency situations during a difficult delivery.
The app contained comprehensible information on childbirth and pregnancy with text and videos and also recommended a list of medicines for mothers and babies, he added.
Midwives could also use the app to deal with critical situations like excessive bleeding and saving newborns’ lives during labour.
The Demographic Health Survey 2015-16 states that 25 newborns die for every 1,000 successful births.
Myanmar has the second highest maternal mortality rate in Asean, with 2,800 women dying due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth every year.
“Midwives are in the frontline in reducing maternal mortality rate. I hope the application will help midwives in remote areas,” said Dr Hla Mya Thway Eindra, director of the maternal and reproductive health division at the Public Health Department.
The app will be introduced to healthcare facilities throughout the country and installed on the mobile phones of midwives. There is reportedly a plan to give midwives tablet computers pre-installed with the app.
The Denmark-based Maternity Foundation, the Copenhagen University and the University of Southern Denmark developed the app, which is apparently used in over 40 countries in Africa and Southeast Asia.
