Fire destroyed Nantphalon market in Tamu Township, Sagaing region near the Myanmar-India border on the night of February 7.
“The fire was big and the firefighters could not control the blaze,” said Myint Zaw, chairman of the NLD party for Tamu Township
. The fire started around 10 pm.
Firefighters arrived to find a large blaze, forcing them to move the fire engines back, he said.
“The left side of the market is destroyed,” he said, while firefighters continued their work early on Thursday morning.
“They are trying to control the fire, to stop it from spreading to the right side of the market. There are firecrackers in the market. The blaze continued to grow as firefighters tried to put out the fire.”
The market is located at the Myanmar-India border in Tamu Township. There are thousands of shops in the market, which mainly sells consumer and farm products to buyers from seven states in India bordering Myanmar.
A local Pauk Pyar said on Thursday morning: “About 90 per cent of the blaze is put out and some of the places are still burning. It is under control now. Shops that sell mattresses, shoes, food, electrical products and housewares were destroyed by the fire.
“I heard that fire engines from India came to put out the fire.”
