Myanmar short film “The Gatekeeper” has been selected to have its North American premiere at the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, or ShortFest, later this month.
“The Gatekeeper” tells the story of Thet Naing Oo – the man who operates the railroad crossing barrier on Pyithayar Avenue in Yangon’s Yankin Township.
The seven-minute film was directed by 23-year-old Yangon Film School student Thida Swe, who, before studying film, worked for an NGO combatting inequality and gender-based violence in Myanmar.
The film was completed earlier this year and was previously shown as part of the Leiden International Short Film Experience last month.
It will appear on June 23 as part of ShortFest’s “On the Job” program, which showcases films about the “joy, monotony, fulfillment, and misery of work.”
For those who can’t make it to California by then, we’ll let you know here when it becomes available Myanmar audiences.
