Indawgyi Lake has been designated as an ASEAN Heritage Park of Myanmar in 2003 due to its unique ecosystem and biodiversity richness.

Dr. Nyi Nyi Kyaw, Director- General of Forest Department, said the designation as a MAB reserve is recognition of the value of its biodiversity.
He said it is also a promise from the government for further development efforts and cooperation with local residents for preservation of the lake and its surrounding areas.
